For the last time, I will address you all before departing. Hello and welcome back to my blog where we continue to recap what appears to be depression in the version of a novel, we hope for a shine of happiness in this week's reading.
can we get a bit of happy???
In a way, you do get a bit of happiness in the ending of the novel but it is simply in satisfaction and not truly do to happy events occurring in either of the sister's favor. This week's reading began with the realization of a couple different symbols. Sadhana's diary is a huge symbol of the secrets kept between the two sisters and thus always why Beena tries to read it. I believe in a way Beena attempted to read it as she wished her and Sadhana were much closer and that they're no secrets between the two of them, leading to her attempting to read all of Sadhana's secrets. After we learn of the death of Sadhana "She was here, in the apartment, Beena. I scared her to death" (418 Nawaz). The reader then notices right after the news has been told to Beena that she wishes to see Sadhana's diary. However, Libby tells her "It's gone" (419). "I threw it out" (419). This doesn't stop Beena in her search for her sister's diary. Although I found this a curious decision at first it makes sense, in the end, knowing the character of Beena she simply wanted to see if what she had stayed with Sadhana until her death, if her sister had died hating her. However, I was wrong in this judgment as for when Beena finds the diary at the end of the novel, she throws it away as if it mattered to her not even a little.
more sadness
Another major part of this week's reading was Beena's meet up with Ravi the father of her child. Honestly, I didn't read much into this and I really couldn't tell you why, it just seemed like one of the minor problems that Beena was dealing with at the time and well, I got this one right. The meet up was pretty well full of nothing. Beena essentially threatened Ravi with Quinn and told him if he didn't do what she said that she would tell everyone that he had a kid. Ravi now being a well known political leader could not afford this and listened to Beena in the end. Kind of a cool moment honestly, for all the times Beena got pushed around in the novel she was the one doing the pushing this time, showed some serious girl power and for a minute I felt happy for Beena, nothing but happiness.
a tiny bit of happy hope
As the end of the novel approaches and we begin to see the plot dwindle and unfold even further, I personally began to notice a type of recurring message throughout. A message that simply put states that sometimes there are things that we as people will never know about another, whether that be by design or by chance there are somethings people just aren't meant to know about each other. Beena tells Quinn in a very calm state "'There are some things we won't ever know" (440). I can relate to this idea as well as I personally believe in the privacy of the person and that some things are better kept as a secret. Our secrets in a way are what make us who we are if we had no secrets then anybody could claim to know everything about anyone else and as we know this is simply not the case. I can relate to Beena tossing Sadhana's diary away at the end of the novel as I believe this could be symbolic of her effort to cleanse her past and move on with her new life, and I too have left things I am not proud of in the past, I believe everyone has.
LOL kind of the way I view this book
So to put it nicely Bone & Bread is a terrible sorrow book that has many symbolic meanings within. Personally, I feel like it was well written and really told a story I could get behind and truly feel. The bottom line was that it was a good book and reminded me of a few life lessons.
Thanks again everyone! I'll catch you all next time. :)
